🐒 Meet the Ring-Tailed Lemurs: The Stars of Anja

Anja is home to the highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) in all of Madagascar. With over 300 individuals, these charismatic creatures are the main attraction. Visitors can observe them basking on sun-warmed boulders, leaping gracefully between rocks, or foraging for food. The lemurs are habituated to human presence, allowing for close encounters and excellent photo opportunities.

• Flora: The reserve boasts a mix of dry forest and savannah vegetation, with species like Melia azedarach providing food for the lemurs. 
• Reptiles: Visitors might encounter species such as the Madagascar ground boa (Acrantophis madagascariensis) and various chameleons, including the giant chameleon (Furcifer oustaleti).
• Insects: Look out for the Malagasy lantern bug (Zanna madagascariensis) and the waxy planthopper (Flatida rosea), both unique to Madagascar.

🚗 Getting There

Anja is conveniently located along the RN7, making it easily accessible from both Ambalavao and Fianarantsoa. The reserve is a popular stop for travelers journeying between these towns.

Visitors are required to hire a local guide, with fees varying depending on the length of the hike. The shorter trail takes about 1–2 hours, while the longer trail can take up to 6 hours and includes a hike to the top of the granite peak for panoramic views.
